Family members of labourer hacked, burnt alive in Rajasthan demand guilty be hanged

Family members of Afrazul Khan (47), who was brutally killed in Rajasthan and a video of his killing circulated on social media, are in disbelief. “Those who killed him like an animal and showed his footage to the globe ought to be hanged,” they demand, alleging that there’s a conspiracy.

A Muslim laborer hailing from Malda in West Bengal, Afrazul was hacked then burnt alive over an alleged affair. The main suspect had someone film the killing and share it on social media with a stern warning. On Thursday, police arrested Shambhulal Regar, the main suspect in the case. At Afrazul’s place Saiyadpur, over 325 kms from Kolkata, relatives have gathered in mourning shortly when they received a decision from the Rajasthan Police.

“We need people who killed my husband so brutally and showed it to the world be hanged. I need Insaaf (justice). He was solely killed because he was a Muslim. Yesterday, at around 3 pm, we received a call from Rajasthan Police and were told that my husband has been dead,” aforesaid Gul Bahar Bibi, talking to The Indian express over the phone.

“We even spoke to him on Tuesday. He calls us every day. We don’t understand what love jihad is. He has grandchildren. They butchered my father like animals before setting him burning. I need people who did that to suffer in the same manner. I have seen the video and the cries of my helpless father whereas he was being killed,” aforesaid Rejina Khatun girl of the victim.

Afrazul, father of 3 girls was scheduled to get back home later this month to arrange for the marriage of his youngest girl. Consistent with family members, for the past twelve years, Afrazul has been working as an unskilled laborer in Rajasthan. Every 2 months he returns home. He has a small plot of land that isn’t enough to support his family.

“There could be a conspiracy and big individuals are concerned. What will a laborer do? The way in which the crime is highlighted on social media shows that there’s a deep conspiracy and big people are concerned. we’ve relatives in Rajasthan who are at the police station currently,” aforesaid Zeenat Khan, the Afrazul’s niece.

After the news bust, villagers poured into the house of the victim, awaiting the body to be brought back so the final rites may be completed, several are in disbelief. They are saying that Afrazul they knew was a religious man.

“I have known him for years. There’s no bad record in his name here. He was a gentleman and a religious person,” aforesaid Jewel Choudhury, the victim’s neighbor. Another neighbour, Abraham sheikh expressed concern regarding the future of his kids. “Now who can run the family? His youngest girl studies in class 10. He’s the sole earning member of the family and really poor,” he said.
